Where is The Metadata on My Squarespace Site?

If you are starting on the road to SEO, you have probably seen the word metadata or meta tags floating around. Squarespace makes it quick and painless to add metadata throughout your site.

Now, the challenge is finding it.

As a general rule of thumb, you will be looking for the gear icon, the editor settings button, and then the letters SEO. Regardless of the size or purpose of your site, below is our complete list of places that you can edit the metadata on your site. Plus, you can watch this video to walk through it in detail.

    List of Squarespace Metadata

    Squarespace Homepage Metadata

    • Squarespace Homepage Metadata: This can be edited from the SEO tab of your Squarespace editor (Marketing >> SEO tab). Adding Metadata to this section is essentially adding SEO to your site as a whole, so be sure to give extra care to this area.

    Squarespace Page Metadata

    • Images Metadata on Squarespace (not section background images): All images on any page of your site can be tagged for SEO. The only caveat here is when they are full-sized background images. Those images do not carry metadata.

    • Squarespace Video Metadata: Same as images, all videos can be tagged for SEO purposes inside the caption. The only major caveat here is when they are full-sized background videos. These cannot be natively optimized inside of the Squarespace editor.

    • Squarespace Gallery Metadata: You can write metadata for all photos and videos inside a gallery. Just be mindful: on some sites and gallery settings, the metadata can show up on the front end and becoming visible on the front end.

    • SEO metadata for Squarespace Pages: For each page (regular page, gallery page, shop page, or blog page), you can change customize the SEO title & description.

    Squarespace Gallery metadata

    • Squarespace Gallery block metadata: Every image or video inside of a gallery can have metadata added to it for better SEO.

    • Squarespace Gallery Page Metadata: On Squarespace 7.0 (the older version), you can have a gallery page. In that case, the gallery page and every image and video in the gallery could be tagged. One important note while editing the metadata is to watch out for metadata that is added can become visible on the front end of your site.

    Blogging Metadata for Squarespace SEO

    • Blog Post Squarespace Metadata: To start editing the Blog post SEO, hover over the individual post and click on the three dots that appear. Click the "settings" button, and the menu that appears will let you edit the metadata.

    • Picture metadata on Squarespace: The pictures on the blog can have metadata added to them like you would on any other page. Add Metadata to these like you would on a normal page. You can also try double clicking the photo to edit the metadata.

    • Video metadata on Squarespace: Videos on your Blog can have metadata added to them like you would on any normal page. Search engines will be able to better index your blog posts by adding metadata text for the videos. Take this time to add a brief summary of your video.

    • SEO for Squarespace Event page Metadata: Inside the event menu, hover over the event tab of interest and click on the 3 dots that appear. Clicking settings and then SEO will let you handle the metadata for the individual event page.

    • Squarespace Event Picture Metadata: Tagging the Photos inside of your Event page can help search engines to broadcast your event to a wider audience.

    • Squarespace Event page Video Metadata: You can tag videos on an event page like you would on any normal Squarespace page. Make sure to add metadata here to help get your events noticed by search engines.

    Squarespace Portfolio Metadata

    • Squarespace Project page metadata: You can edit the metadata for individual project pages to help show your work to a wider variety of clients.

    • Squarespace Project Image Metadata: Be sure to add metadata to your project images on Squarespace. Do this to help more people see the fruits of your labor.

    • Squarespace Project Video Metadata: You can add metadata to videos inside of project pages to improve the overall project page SEO.

    Squarespace Store page Metadata

    • Item Page metadata: You can edit the SEO of each item in your store on Squarespace. You can get here by clicking into your store inside of the editor. Hover your mouse over the item of interest and click the gear or three dots that appear on the right-hand side. Click the edit button and use the popup menu to edit the SEO of your item

    • Item Photo Metadata: It is possible to add metadata to the Individual photos of your products or services. Be sure to tag this section with your desired keywords to help your item or service to show up better in search engines

    • Additional info Metadata: The “additional Info” tab lets you open a small popup window for the item. This window essentially acts as a page where you can add photos and videos to be tagged for better item SEO.
